Located 90 air miles southwest of Muncho Lake, British Columbia, our Frog River outpost is nestled in a mountain valley, high in the Cassiar Mountains right at the continental divide between the Pacific and Arctic watersheds. In less than 2 hours, one can wander from the arctic watershed at Frog River to the uppermost Pitman Lake in the Pacific drainage basin. This gives our guests access to two different drainage basins with their own unique fishing experiences. To the north and the south of the cabin, a high mountain valley gives way to spectacular mountain ridges and peaks. The elevation of the Frog River outpost and its lakes is at 3300 ft. There are 7500 ft high ridges to the north or south that can be reached on daily wilderness hiking trips from your log cabin.
Back at the outpost, a sandy beach in front of the cabin invites you to enjoy the long summer days in the sun. Animals like moose, caribou and mountain goats are frequently observed. Bald eagles nest in the valley and wait for careless grayling to surface. In addition, very few people know that there is actually a hot spring on the Frog River - canoe to the first rapids, a short portage, canoe 3 miles down the second lake, leave the canoe on the beach and hike for 1 hour downstream to the natural hot spring.
Away from any signs of civilization this undisturbed ecosystem is a nature lover's paradise.
This world class fly-fishing area is home to some of the largest arctic graylings known to bushpilot Urs. The many streams, pools, inlets and rapids are classic fly-fishing waters. You will find success with nymphs and dry flies. Bull trout also frequent the lake and inlet and are caught on both Fly and Spincasting rods. The diverse structure in the two narrow, but 6 mile long Frog River lakes hold many lake trout in the 20+ lbs range. Due to the cold waters lake trout fishing is excellent all summer long after a slow start in June. Try trolling with a crocodile type spoon or jig with a mepps spinner.
Frog River outpost cabin is open from late May until early October
Late May to late June: Nature is awakening, the leaves are sprouting, enjoy almost 24 hours of daylight. Excellent lake trout fishing in the lake. Enjoy a day trip to the nearby hot springs and take in the early summer weather.
June to early August: Feature long summer days and mild temperatures. Arctic graylings are moving into the streams and Lake trout can be caught near the inlets with flies and spoons.
End of June until early Oct: The best fly-fishing for arctic grayling in the streams and pools of the upper Frog River. Venture to one of the high mountain ridges to take in beautiful high alpine vistas. Excellent hiking and exploring, observe the beavers building their dens for the winter. This time of the year, moose and caribou travel through the Frog River valley as they journey between Arctic and Pacific watersheds. The fall colours are in their prime in September.
