SOUTH GATAGA OUTPOST
The South Gataga Lakes are only accessible by floatplane. A stay in our remote log outpost cabin allows you to savour the tranquility of this untouched mountain valley for an extended period of time. Perfect for canoe adventurers, fishermen and nature enthusiasts alike, the South Gataga is the perfect spot to experience a wonderful nature vacation away from it all in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.
Located on the shore of the largest of four mountain lakes in Dune Za Keyih Provincial Park, this cabin is beautifully nested by the Northern Rocky Mountain's spectacular mountain peaks. Drop a line in the lake for trophy sized Lake Trout, Arctic Grayling and vicious Northern Pike.
The South Gataga outpost cabin is located in the heart of the Muskwa-Kechika Wilderness Area, approximately 80 air miles southwest of Muncho Lake. The pristine South Gataga Valley is surrounded by the snow-capped mountain peaks of the Northern Rocky Mountains. A natural mineral lick on the second lake attracts Moose and Caribou and can easily be reached by boat or canoe through a short connecting stream. Beavers, Otters, Wolves and countless birds make the South Gataga Valley their home. These lakes feed the Gataga River — "Gataga" meaning white water in the native Kaska/Dene language.

A spin casters dream, the South Gataga lakes are home to monster Northern Pike. They absolutely love to hide in the weeds and lake grasses. The Pike have some fierce competition though in the Lake Trout as both species can grow to substantial sizes. Bushpilot Urs’ favorite lure is the 5 of Diamond or Mepps Spinner for both Lake Trout and Northern Pike. For trophy size Arctic Grayling up to 4½ pounds try a dark patterned nymph or dry fly or #2 Mepps Spinner.
South Gataga outpost cabin is open from late May until early October
Late May to late June: Nature is awakening, the leaves are sprouting, Lake Trout fishing is at its peak, enjoy almost 24 hours of daylight. Arctic Grayling are a joy to catch the whole season and spawn at the beginning of June in the shallow bays.
June until mid August: It is summer in the Muskwa Kechika and the South Gataga Valley. Cow Moose and their offspring are frequently observed along the shores and at the mineral lick. Fly-fishing for Lake Trout (up to 7 lbs) in the shallow bay in the southwest end of the lake is very productive.
While the Lake Trout descend into deeper waters after mid July, they are frequently caught with heavier lures or with jigs. Great Pike and Grayling fishing. Daytime highs are in the 25 °C (75 °F) range.
Mid August until early Oct: Enjoy fall time. The colors are the most beautiful early through mid September. Fishing is great for Northern Pike and Arctic Grayling. Lake Trout come up into the shallows to spawn in late September. Northern Pike are found all over the lake. Some monsters of over 30 lbs have been caught.
Frequently magical displays of Northern Lights are visible from the cabin during the colourful fall.
